The special committee tasked to replace Ballmer includes lead independent director John Thompson, Audit Committee Chairman Chuck Noski, and Compensation Committee Chairman Steve Luczo, and of course Bill Gates. In a brief message on the Microsoft news site, Gates assures everyone that he’ll be working closely with everyone involved to identify a great new CEO. It’s possible that Ballmer will leave his position at Microsoft before this 12 month period expires, if a new CEO can be found and the transition happens smoothly.
I’m going to miss the monkeying about, but I think it’s the right move, especially in today’s competitive environment. I think Microsoft needs that tech savvy, but business oriented executive going forward, perhaps Julie Larson-Green.
Update: Mary Jo Foley has suggested some candidates of her own and when it comes to Microsoft, there aren’t many who are as knowledgeable as her. Out of her list I think that Tony Bates and Satya Nadella are the front runners, especially Nadella who’s considered an engineer’s engineer internally and perhaps that’s what Microsoft want after the more business oriented Ballmer. Larson-Green is nowhere to be seen so it seems I have no idea what I’m talking about. But please keep reading the blog…pretty please?
